It is all a question of probabilities. Quite simple, really, if one bets with any sequential consistency. The combinations totaling seven or eleven have considerable value when achieved on the primary attempt. With eight variations possible to create those totals, the likelihood of those totals occurring is not significant.

What’s going on? I saw two other people answering this question today, and they both said the same thing: Will is Patroclus and Hannibal is Achilles. I’ve never seen anybody state otherwise anywhere. So why are people doubting this now? Did someone write an awesome meta saying the opposite, that I just missed? Am I behind the times?
Hannibal says Will is Patroclus right on the show. It’s really not a matter for debate.
Achilles lamenting the death of Patroclus. Whenever he’s mentioned in the Iliad, Patroclus seemed to be defined by his empathy.
That would make him Will.
Will says the same thing, almost, only he takes it a step further, and actually describes what he’s been doing to Hannibal since episode 208.
He became Achilles on the field of war. He died from there wearing his armor.
On the field of battle between Hannibal and Will, Will dons Hannibal’s armor: he uses his empathy to become Hannibal. He grooms himself more like Hannibal, acquires his tastes, his way of thinking, his powerful manipulations, some of his mannerisms, and of course, that small matter of murdering and eating people and displaying their corpses.
It’s also foreshadowing Will’s eventual demise: his loss is both physical in that Hannibal destroys him, and it is spiritual in that it is also the loss of the friendship, the person that Hannibal believed to exist, that Hannibal laments. And Achilles does have serious trouble responding appropriately and moving on with his life after Patroclus dies, so there is that.
The Iliad starts out being an adventure (actually it’s kind of like high school), but it ends up being a reverie about grief and loss, just as Hannibal is. In the weird logic of Hannibal, death is the voice of love (“Love and death are the great hinges on which all human sympathies turn”). As depicted in the artwork, the love shown through the death of Patroclus is Achilles’ love, expressed through his grief, which overwhelms all sense and reason and belief, such that Achilles can’t let Patroclus go to the afterlife by giving him a proper burial. By choosing this topic for his drawing, Hannibal is expressing the epic, unfathomable depth of his feelings for Will. He’s telling Will how much he loves him.
If Hannibal had identified them in reverse, with Will as Achilles, and Hannibal as Patroclus, that would be like saying, “Look, Will. I drew a picture of how much you love me!” Which would be weird. Not that it’s not weird to begin with, but still…that would be more weird.
It’s an analogy, not an allegory: Hannibal’s love for Will is as Achilles’ love for Patroclus, and the characters do some vaguely similar things, but the story contained in Hannibal and the relationship between Hannibal and Will do not directly represent or symbolize the contents of the Iliad in a larger way.
Finally, does anyone really think Hannibal would identify himself with the sidekick instead of the virtually invincible demigod superhero?
(And besides, Achilles was a dick.)
